Several learners are feared dead after a tragic accident at Kapsabet School for the Deaf in Nandi County on Thursday, March 12.
Reports indicate that about 11 students fell into a septic tank after its cover collapsed while they were standing on it. The learners had reportedly climbed onto the septic tank to catch a glimpse of President William Ruto’s motorcade as it passed near the school early Thursday morning.
The president was heading to Kapsabet Girls High School for an official visit when the incident happened.

Witnesses say the students gathered on top of the long septic tank, estimated to be around 20 feet, but the structure suddenly gave way, causing the learners to fall inside.
Residents living nearby quickly rushed to the scene and started rescue efforts before police officers arrived. Several students were later pulled out and rushed to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital for treatment.
At the time of publishing, some reports suggested that at least one learner may have died, although this had not yet been officially confirmed by authorities.
President William Ruto later stopped at the school and expressed his regret over the incident. He also announced a donation of KSh5 million to help improve infrastructure at the institution.

“I am very sorry for the accident that happened here when the students came out to see me. We will work together with the county government to understand what happened,” the president said.
He added that after assessing the situation at the school, it was clear that some infrastructure improvements were needed.
“I will leave you with KSh5 million to support development in this school. Please also inform us of other needs you may have,” Ruto added.
After the visit, the president proceeded to Kapsabet Girls High School, where he attended a thanksgiving event.
Meanwhile, the public is waiting for an official report from police and other authorities as investigations begin to determine the exact cause of the accident.
