Engineers Board of Kenya Releases New List of Approved Engineering Courses

The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) has shared a new list of approved engineering degree programmes offered in universities across Kenya.

In an announcement made on Tuesday, March 17, the board explained that all engineering courses are now grouped into two main categories. These are Tier 1 programmes, which meet international standards, and Tier 2 programmes, which are approved locally.

EBK also warned that only students who study approved courses will be allowed to register as engineers in Kenya. The board advised the public to always confirm whether a course is recognised before enrolling.

Tier 1 Engineering Programmes

Tier 1 includes a few special programmes that meet global standards set under the Washington Accord. These courses are highly recognised internationally, meaning graduates can easily work in other countries.

Only three universities in Kenya currently offer these programmes:

  • Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology – Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering

  • Strathmore University – Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering

  • Dedan Kimathi University of Technology – Bachelor of Science in Mechatronics Engineering

Students who graduate from these programmes enjoy better global recognition and job opportunities.

Tier 2 Engineering Programmes

Tier 2 includes many engineering courses offered by different universities in Kenya. These programmes meet local standards and cover various fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical, agricultural, and environmental engineering.

Here are some of the universities offering these courses:

  • University of Nairobi – Offers courses like Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, and Biosystems Engineering.

  • Moi University – Provides programmes such as Civil & Structural Engineering, Mechanical & Production Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and more.

  • Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology – Offers a wide range including Aerospace, Marine, Chemical, Civil, and Mechatronics Engineering.

  • Egerton University – Known for Agricultural, Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering courses.

  • Kenyatta University – Offers programmes like Biomedical, Aerospace, Petroleum, Civil, and Electrical Engineering.

  • Technical University of Kenya and Technical University of Mombasa – Provide several engineering courses including Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Chemical Engineering.

Other universities offering approved engineering programmes include:

  • Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology

  • University of Eldoret

  • Multimedia University of Kenya

  • Murang’a University of Technology

  • Machakos University

  • South Eastern Kenya University

  • Taita Taveta University

  • University of Embu

  • Chuka University

Important Advice to Students

EBK has urged students and parents to be careful when choosing engineering courses. The board emphasized that studying an unapproved programme may prevent graduates from being registered as engineers.

They also encouraged the public to report any suspicious institutions or fake courses to their offices.
