Kakamega Polytechnic Principal Found Dead in Lake Victoria

Residents of Kakamega and the education community are in shock after the death of Caroline Khamete, the Principal of Kakamega County Polytechnic, who was found dead days after she went missing.

Principal Reportedly Abducted Before Death

According to reports, Khamete disappeared on Wednesday while heading home from work, as was her normal routine.

New details now suggest that she may have been abducted by unknown people before her body was later discovered in Lake Victoria in Kisumu County.

Earlier claims that she had taken her own life have since been dismissed, with emerging information pointing to a possible abduction.

Her sudden and mysterious death has raised serious concerns, with many calling for thorough investigations.

Governor Barasa Leads in Mourning

Fernandes Barasa, the Governor of Kakamega County, expressed deep sorrow following Khamete’s death.

He described her as a dedicated and hardworking leader who played a key role in promoting technical education in the county.

Barasa praised her efforts in mentoring young people, especially those supported by the county government and development partners, including students who had dropped out of school.

He also sent his condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and students during this painful time.

“We have lost a committed and selfless leader. May her family find strength and comfort during this difficult period,” Barasa said.

Authorities have confirmed that the case is under active police investigation.

A Growing Concern Over Mysterious Deaths

Khamete’s death comes just months after another shocking case involving a school principal in Kakamega County.

In November 2025, Simon Isiaho Shange, the principal of Munyuki PAG Secondary School, also went missing under unclear circumstances.

He had been involved in a road accident along the Eldoret–Malaba Highway while on official duty to collect KCSE examination papers. Although witnesses saw him alive after the crash, he later disappeared mysteriously.

Five days later, his body was found in a river, showing signs of torture.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers treated the case as a suspected murder, raising alarm over the safety of school administrators.
