The government has started releasing funds for the March 2026 Inua Jamii programme, bringing relief to thousands of vulnerable households across the country.
The Ministry of Gender, Culture, and Children Services, through the State Department for Children Services, confirmed that millions of shillings have already been disbursed to support orphans and vulnerable children under the Cash Transfer programme.
Over 430,000 Households to Benefit
According to the Ministry, a total of KSh 860.3 million has been released to support about 430,198 households enrolled in the programme.
Each selected household will receive KSh 2,000, with payments expected to start rolling out from Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
The funds cover the March 2026 cycle and are meant to help families take care of basic needs such as food, education, and health support for children.
Purpose of the Programme
The Cash Transfer for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (CT-OVC) under Inua Jamii is designed to support families taking care of children who are either orphaned or living in vulnerable conditions.
The main goal is to ensure that children remain in family care instead of institutions while getting proper support for their development.
The programme also helps improve:
- School attendance and completion rates
- Nutrition and health among children
- Household food security
- Child protection and welfare
Inua Jamii is Kenya’s main social support programme aimed at helping the most vulnerable citizens. While many people associate it with support for elderly citizens, it also covers orphans, vulnerable children, and persons living with severe disabilities.
The programme was unified between 2017 and 2018 to make payments more efficient and reduce duplication of beneficiaries across different support categories.
Over the years, the government has significantly increased funding for social welfare programmes. Spending rose from about KSh 4.3 billion in 2011/12 to nearly KSh 30 billion by 2018, showing growing support for vulnerable groups.
In January 2026 alone, the government released KSh 8.57 billion to support over one million beneficiaries under different Inua Jamii categories.
In 2025, another KSh 3.5 billion was disbursed to continue monthly payments.
Who Benefits from Inua Jamii?
The programme currently supports more than 1.7 million beneficiaries across all 47 counties in Kenya. These include:
