Rigathi Gachagua Names New Secretary General for DCP Party After Firing Hezron Obaga

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has removed Hezron Obaga as the Secretary General of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and appointed Nyandarua Senator John Methu to take over the position.
Gachagua announced the changes on Monday, May 25, during a press briefing held at the party headquarters in Nairobi. He said Methu will immediately start serving as the acting Secretary General and spokesperson of the party.
According to Gachagua, the senator will now lead DCP campaigns across the country, including the upcoming Ol Kalou by-election set for July 16.
“The media should now contact Senator John Methu on all matters concerning DCP because he will serve as the acting Secretary General and party spokesperson from today,” Gachagua said.
He added that Methu’s name will later be submitted to the Registrar of Political Parties for official registration as the new DCP Secretary General.
Gachagua explained that the decision was reached after a meeting by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). However, he did not explain why Hezron Obaga was removed from the position despite being one of the founding members of the party.
Obaga became the party’s Secretary General when DCP was launched in May 2025.
Gachagua also claimed that the party has already attracted more than 4 million members across the country. He added that over 10,000 aspirants are interested in using the DCP ticket in the 2027 General Election.
“Many leaders have already joined the party and we promise all aspirants free and fair nominations ahead of the next election,” he said.
The former Deputy President also gave Methu the responsibility of leading the DCP campaigns in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election and ensuring the party wins the seat.
At the same time, Methu has been asked to help recruit 10 million members into the party before the 2027 elections.
However, Methu’s appointment could face legal challenges because he was elected as a senator through the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket.
Gachagua said the party’s legal team is already prepared to handle any court cases or political disputes that may arise following the appointment.
While accepting the new role, Methu defended the decision by referring to the 2022 situation where President William Ruto became the leader of UDA while still linked to the Jubilee Party.
