Relief for University Students as HELB Begins 2025/26 Loan Disbursement

Thousands of university students have received good news after the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) confirmed that it has started releasing funds for the 2025/26 academic year.
The board announced on Wednesday, June 24, that tuition money for both first-time applicants and continuing students is already being sent to universities. HELB also said that other payments, including personal loans and scholarships, will be released later.
Students have been advised to check with their university finance offices to confirm whether their tuition fees have already been paid.
According to reports, some of the batches that have already received payments include batch numbers 6938, 6939, 6940 and 6948. More batches are expected to be processed in the coming days.
The update comes after many students raised concerns over delays in getting information about their loan applications. Some feared they would miss government support after failing to receive any communication from HELB.
The latest announcement will come as a relief to many students preparing to report back to universities in September.
Recently, HELB also opened the application window for continuing students and urged them to submit their applications before the deadline.
The government has increased funding for student loans in the 2026/27 financial year, setting aside a record Ksh58 billion. This is a major increase from the Ksh41 billion allocated previously and is expected to help more students under the Student-Centred Funding Model.
Despite the increased funding, HELB has faced financial challenges in recent years. The board has struggled to meet the high demand for loans, leaving many students without support.
As tuition payments continue, many students are now waiting for an update on when upkeep money will be sent to their accounts, as HELB has not yet announced the dates for those payments.
