Two Children Die
Two children were confirmed dead following the accident.
Several other people who were near the roadside were also injured and were taken for medical attention.
The accident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of roadside gatherings, especially in busy areas where pedestrians stand close to moving vehicles.
Ikonge is a busy trading centre in Kisii County, with many people using the roads and roadside areas for businesses and other activities.
The incident has also highlighted the dangers children face when they gather close to busy roads during public events.
Authorities are expected to establish what caused the matatu to leave its lane and crash into the crowd.
