Seven Killed, 28 Injured After Minibus Carrying Passengers to Dowry Ceremony Crashes in Makueni

Seven people have died and 28 others injured after a minibus carrying passengers to a dowry ceremony crashed in Makueni County.

The accident happened at around 6:30pm on Friday along the Kalamba-Kalembwani murram road in Maumba area.

The minibus, commonly known as Nidhamu, was carrying about 50 passengers travelling from Nthongoni in Kibwezi East to Ikangavya for a dowry payment ceremony and celebrations.

The vehicle was reportedly travelling through the hilly Kalembwani area when the driver lost control. It veered off the road and rolled several times down a steep hillside.

Six men and one woman died in the crash.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, rescue teams from the county government, police and other agencies responded to the scene and helped remove passengers who were trapped inside the wreckage.

Of the 28 injured passengers, four sustained serious injuries and were taken to Wote County Hospital for specialised treatment. The other 24, who suffered less serious injuries, were taken to Matiliku Sub-County Hospital.

The Makueni County Emergency Response Unit, Department of Health and Kenya Red Cross deployed three ambulances and an emergency vehicle to support the rescue operation.

The bodies of the seven victims were taken to Kilome Hospital mortuary as authorities prepared for postmortem examinations and identification.

Police also visited the scene as investigations continued to establish what caused the driver to lose control.

Authorities have continued to warn motorists to avoid speeding, reckless driving and other dangerous practices, especially when travelling on hilly and accident-prone roads.
