Five Nthongoni Residents Among 7 Killed in Tragic Kibwezi Road Accident

A sombre mood has hit Nthongoni village in Kibwezi East, Makueni County, following the death of seven people in a road accident along the Emali–Ukia road on Friday.

Five of the victims were residents of Nthongoni. Their families and neighbours are now preparing for their burials as they struggle to come to terms with the sudden loss.

The five had travelled together to accompany one of their own to a dowry ceremony. What was supposed to be a happy family occasion ended in tragedy when the accident occurred on their way back.

Residents gathered in the village on Sunday to comfort the affected families and mourn those who died.

Relatives described the loss as particularly painful because the victims died suddenly and without warning.

Survivors of the accident are still receiving treatment at different health facilities in Makueni County.

According to accounts from some survivors, the driver reportedly struggled to control the 45-seater bus before the accident.

The tragedy has renewed calls for vehicle owners and drivers to take road safety seriously. Residents have urged owners to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and roadworthy before allowing them onto the roads.

The families are now facing the difficult task of preparing for five funerals after what had started as a journey meant to bring two families together.
