Felix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, is a Kenyan celebrity and politician. He achieved a lot in life, rising from humble beginnings. He was first a fisherman in Homa Bay, then became a member of parliament for the Lang’ata constituency. This was due to his hard work and consistency. He has taken on several jobs, including being a radio presenter at Kiss Radio, Radio Maisha, and Hot 96, as well as at national TV stations. Jalang’o is also an MC who performs at big ceremonies. Early Life and Background

Felix Oduor alias Jalang’o was born on April 27, 1983, in Homa Bay County, Nyanza. He is a Luo by tribe. He grew up in a humble family. His father was a fisherman, and his mother sold fish in the market. He chose to work hard and be disciplined in life, considering the state of his family. He also joined his father in fishing activities to help his family.

Education Journey

Despite the challenges he faced in his education, Jalang’o began his primary school education at Homabay Lake Primary School. He was among those who ranked nationally in overall performance, scoring 442 out of 500 in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).
Despite his brilliant performance in KCPE, he never got a chance to join the school he was called to attend, Maseno, a national school with a history of top performance in Nyanza and Kenya. His father lacked enough money to pay for his admission on time.
He later joined a day and boarding Bar Kanyango Secondary, based in Bondo constituency. He later transferred to Nyang’pma Secondary School, which had slightly lower school fees and was also based in Bondo.
Because of the many challenges he faced during his studies, he managed to score a C+ in his KCSE.
Jalang’o could not afford to join college to further his studies and opted to continue with fishing.
Several years after establishing and now had jobs from the entertainment industry, he enroled for a part time studies where he was studying in the evening while doing his jobs, he enrolled for Bachelor of Arts degree in Community Development at Daystar University, after his graduation he was praised by several celebrities, politicians and many publics who were impressed by his achievement in increasing his level of education, this remained as a motivation to youths across the country Kenya. This happened when he was hosting a morning show together with Kamenen Goro at Kiss FM.

Comedy and Rise to Fame

Jalang’o is not just a comedian but a professional one; from his delivery, you just feel it, and from the way he composes his statements. I can recall myself, when I was still a teenager, watching his trending video clips titled ‘Omwanda and Obwogo’; it’s really funny, and you can check it on YouTube.
He came to Nairobi to look for a better life, like so many people do; thus, after he lacked the fees to join college, he decided to pursue comedy and later landed an acting role on Citizen TV in a program famously known as Papa Shirandula. The show featured other famous actors like Awinja and Wilbroda.
He became famous for his courageous, well-composed, and funny Kiswahili-Luo tone, and started gaining a larger audience who loved watching him; he thus landed jobs even to do advertisement videos that were aired on other national TV stations like KBC Channel 1. He built the brand ”Jalang’o” and was known for wearing a green coat.
He started to grow much in the entertainment industry, featuring in music, TV shows, radio shows, MC, and Adverts.

Radio Career

His nature of being funny made him work for top Radio stations in Kenya, which include:
  • Radio Maisha: This was the best-loved show of all time, featuring his colleague Alex Mwakideu, in a morning show in 2012.
  • Hot 96: worked with the legendary journalist Jeff Koinange in a morning show ”Jeff and Jalas” between 2017 and 2018.
  • Milele FM: Again, he reunited with Alex Mwakideu for the breakfast show in 2020, where he disagreed with the payment resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Kiss 100: He worked with a celebrity and radio presenter, Kamene Goro, whose chemistry with him was loved by Kenyans, and he was also a morning show host. From July 2020 to February 2022.

Youtube Channel

Jalang’o seemed to have many plans after quitting Kiss 100. He was interested in entering politics and starting a YouTube channel because he was popular. He did several interviews with the top politicians and celebrities. His channel grew massively. Jalango TV channel is now approaching almost 1 million subscribers, with currently over 715 subscribers.

Political Career

In the 2022 general elections, Jalang’o vied for the Langa’ata Constituency parliamentary seat and won with the ODM party of Raila Amollo Odinga. He defeated his opponent, Nixon Korir, by a large margin. Ever since, he has done much for his constituency by promoting development in the area, particularly in infrastructure and education. He had also been a close friend of Babu Owino during his time as a radio presenter.

Family

Jalang’o married his beautiful wife, Amina Chao, a Taita from Mombasa County, on Saturday, 26 October 2019, and they have been blessed with two kids.
