Steps to Follow When Applying for a Kenyan Passport
Getting a passport gives many Kenyans chances to travel overseas or discover and experience the world outside of Kenya’s boundaries. Still, getting a Kenyan passport can seem hard.
This article provides clear steps to follow when applying for a Kenyan passport .
1. Make sure you have an eCitizen account.
- Create an eCitizen account first. Should you be new to the portal, you will have to register an account using these guidelines:
- Go to the eCitizen web page.
- On the homepage, click Sign In or Register.
- Complete the necessary information, including your ID number, complete name, email address, phone number, and a strong password.
- As directed, confirm your phone number or email address.
- Verify once, then log into your freshly established account.
2. Passport application through eCitizen.
- Click under the list of services, Department of Immigration Services.
- Select Apply for a passport.
- On application category:
- Adults Only (for those aged more than 18 years)
- Children Only (for those less than 18 years)
3. Choose a passport type and size.
Tell whether you are seeking an ordinary, dual, or diplomatic passport. Then, depending on your demands, choose the ideal page count:

4. Fill in the necessary details
Personal Details:
- Using first and second names:
- Surname
- Birthday Date
- Birth Location: Home County and Place of Birth; Country of Birth
- Special qualities—unique physical traits or identifying marks that would help you identify yourself
- Male
- Height, expressed in feet and inches
- Eyelink color
- Citizenship
- Married Status; Occupation/Profession
- Motive for travel
- Location to send in an application
- Ministry of Interior
- Residential Specifications:

- Email address
- Postal address;
- Estate, house number
- Phone number
Identification details:
- The number for the National ID
- Passport Number: Should one be seeking a renewal or replacement,
- Number of Birth Certificate

- Parental Full Names and ID Numbers
- Birthplace of Parents
- Parent Postal Address
5. Upload Necessary Documents
Scan and post the following:
- Recent passport-sized picture with a white background.
- Signature of the applicant on a white background.
- Copies of
– Front and back national identification.
Birth Certificate;
– Death certificates or ID cards for parents (if they are dead)
- Any further documents as indicated for particular circumstances (such as an affidavit on missing or damaged passports).
6. Pay the Application Fee
Choose your preferred payment method on the portal and pay the passport fee. The following payment:
- Access and print the application form.
- Print four pay receipt copies.
7. Submit the Application in Person
Visit the nearest immigration office to apply. This will depend on the location you chose during the application.
The offices are:
- Passport processing and collecting mostly takes place at Nyayo House, Nairobi.
- Mombasa: Serving the coast is the Immigration Office in Mombasa.
- Kisumu: Serving the western part, the Immigration Office is located in Kisumu.
- Eldoret: Serving the Rift Valley is the Immigration Office in Eldoret.
- Embu: Serving the eastern part is the Immigration Office at Embu.
- Nakuru: Additionally, offering passport services is the Immigration Office at Nakuru.
- Garissa: Serving the northeastern part is the Immigration Office in Garissa.
One must have these papers during submission:
- Printed application form.
- One government and one client copy of the payment receipt.
- Original and photocopy versions of the following:
- National identification.
- Birth Certificate;
- ID of the recommender.
- Previous passport (for replacement).
4. Three current, passport-sized photos.
5. Extra papers for unique circumstances:
- Affidavits, police abstracts, and letters of explanation for missing passports.
- Letter explaining mutilated passports.
8. Biometric enrollment (Last step)
Every applicant has to show up personally at the immigration office for biometric registration.
Note: The passport takes 10 business days in case it’s the first application & 5 business days in case of renewal or replacement.
