Another Death in Police Custody: 45-Year-Old Gideon Makau Matatu Operator Dies at Kilungu Police Station

A family in Kilungu is seeking answers following the death of a 45-year-old matatu operator while in police custody.

The deceased, Gideon Makau Mbandi, also known as Maiyu, was reportedly arrested on Tuesday evening, August 4, 2026, at his business premises in Nunguni Shopping Centre.

According to information shared by the family, Mbandi, who worked with Trinity Sacco, was arrested over allegations that he had a panga. He was then taken to Kilungu Police Station, where he was detained.

The family said they learnt of his death the following day through a friend. They were reportedly informed that his body had been taken to the Kilungu Sub-County Hospital Mortuary.

When the family went to the police station, they were allegedly told that Mbandi had died by suicide while inside the police cells.

The family is now questioning the circumstances surrounding his death, particularly how he could have allegedly used his trousers to commit suicide while in a police cell where other suspects were also being held.

They are calling for answers and clarity on what happened to Mbandi between the time of his arrest and his death.

The circumstances surrounding the death remain subject to investigation, and the allegations made by the family have not been independently verified.
