4 Trapped After 8-Storey Building Collapses in Kajiado

At least four people are feared trapped after an eight-storey building under construction collapsed in Oloolua area, Kajiado North Sub-county, in Kajiado County.

According to residents, the building collapsed on Friday night at around 11 pm after heavy rains hit the area.

Eyewitnesses said several workers were inside the construction site when the building collapsed, raising fears that more people could still be trapped under the debris.

After the incident, emergency teams, including the Kenya Red Cross and Nairobi County disaster response officers, were informed. However, residents complained that rescue teams had not arrived at the scene for many hours after the collapse.

Speaking on Saturday morning, angry locals accused the county government of delaying rescue operations as families waited for their loved ones to be rescued.

“One resident said it had been almost ten hours since the building collapsed yet no proper rescue operation had started.”

Another resident also questioned why locals were being blocked from helping at the scene while rescue efforts were still slow.

Residents said most of the people feared trapped are construction workers who were working at the site before the incident happened.

By the time this article was published, police and county officials had not confirmed the exact number of people trapped or injured.

The latest incident adds to the growing number of building collapse cases being reported in Nairobi and nearby counties in recent months.

In April, at least five people died and several others were injured after a building collapsed in Highrise area within Kibera, Nairobi County.

Nairobi disaster management officials confirmed that those injured in the previous incident were taken to Mbagathi Hospital for treatment.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, the Kajiado building was still under construction when it collapsed.
