DCI launches investigation into death of Cyrus Jirongo in road crash

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a detailed investigation into the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, who lost his life in a tragic road accident on Saturday, December 13, 2025.

According to investigators, the accident occurred in the Karai area along the busy Nakuru–Naivasha highway and involved Jirongo’s private vehicle and a public service bus operated by Climax Company Limited.

Preliminary findings indicate that the crash was a head-on collision that happened at around 2:19 a.m. The impact was severe, pushing Jirongo’s vehicle approximately 25 metres from the collision point, while the bus came to rest about 50 metres away.

Following the incident, a joint team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory was dispatched to the scene. The team conducted initial examinations and secured key evidence to aid the investigation.

Detectives have since obtained CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station, which has provided crucial insight into Jirongo’s final movements.

Police say the footage shows Jirongo entering the petrol station at 2:18:40 a.m. while heading from Nairobi but did not stop to refuel. He briefly paused at the station’s exit at 2:19:10 a.m., before making a right turn back toward Nairobi at 2:19:19 a.m.

Just seconds later, at 2:19:25 a.m., the CCTV captured the moment the Climax Company bus rammed into his vehicle.

PSV Driver Questioned

The bus driver, identified as Tyrus Kamau Githinji, has been interrogated by detectives. He had earlier recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base.

Police confirmed that he was released on cash bail as investigations continue into a possible case of causing death by dangerous driving. He is expected to report back to the traffic base on December 22, 2025, for further action.

Investigators have also recorded statements from the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant, both of whom witnessed events leading up to the crash.

The DCI noted that forensic experts are expected to revisit the scene for further analysis, while detectives continue to piece together Jirongo’s movements prior to the accident. This includes recording statements from individuals he had interacted with earlier that night, particularly those present at a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.

Additional statements will also be taken from passengers aboard the Climax Company bus and other potential witnesses.

Once investigations are complete, police say a comprehensive file will be prepared and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review and further direction.

Meanwhile, the late former legislator will be laid to rest at his Lumakanda home on Tuesday, December 30.
