Airtel Africa, SpaceX Partner to Bring Starlink Internet
Airtel Africa has partnered with SpaceX to roll out Starlink Direct-to-Cell connectivity across Africa, a move set to transform mobile access in remote regions.
Under the deal, Airtel customers in 14 African countries will be able to access mobile network services even in areas without traditional network coverage. The service will rely on Starlink satellites to connect compatible smartphones directly to space.
The new satellite-to-mobile service is expected to launch in 2026, starting with text messaging and limited data services. Full rollout will depend on approvals from regulators in each country.

The partnership also includes support for Starlink’s next-generation satellites, which promise up to 20 times faster data speeds, bringing high-speed internet directly to mobile phones without the need for towers.
Airtel Africa becomes the first mobile operator on the continent to offer Starlink Direct-to-Cell services, powered by more than 650 satellites designed to cover hard-to-reach locations.
Speaking in Nairobi, Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar said the partnership will help close Africa’s digital gap by extending connectivity to underserved communities.
He noted that satellite technology complements Airtel’s ground networks, especially in areas where building towers is difficult or costly.
On her part, Starlink Vice President Stephanie Bednarek said the collaboration will allow millions of Africans to stay connected for the first time, opening access to essential digital services.
The two companies say they will continue exploring more ways to expand digital inclusion across Africa.
