Wetang’ula Appeals for Prayers After Losing Cousin Amid Multiple Family Deaths

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has asked Kenyans to keep his family in prayers after they went through several painful deaths within a short period.

Wetang’ula made the emotional appeal on Friday, January 2, 2026, during the burial of his cousin Simon Wekesa Wetang’ula at Mukhweya village in Kabuchai Constituency, Bungoma County.

Speaking to mourners, the Ford Kenya party leader said his extended family is experiencing a difficult season marked by repeated bereavements. He noted that the losses have deeply affected the family as they begin the new year.

Later, in a message shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Wetang’ula said he urged the church and the community to stand with the family through prayers and faith.

“As we laid my cousin to rest today, I asked the church to keep our family in prayer. We have lost several loved ones over the past year, and we can only overcome this difficult period through faith as we usher in the new year,” Wetang’ula said.

Family Still Mourning Recent Losses

The burial came barely weeks after the Wetang’ula family lost their brother, James Mukhwana Wetang’ula, a respected educationist and disciplinarian. Mukhwana was the eldest son of the late Dominic Wetang’ula and a brother to Moses Wetang’ula and Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi.

Earlier in January 2025, the family also buried their mother, Ann Nanyama, in a ceremony attended by President William Ruto.

The series of losses has left the family grieving as they seek strength through faith and community support.
