The Slang Word 'NYASH' Commonly Used in Kenya to Refer to Girls That Carry Heavy Officially Added to Oxford Dictionary
The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has officially added several African words to its collection, including a slang term widely used in Kenya to describe girls with curvy backsides. This update highlights the increasing recognition of African expressions in the global English language.
Among the new entries is “Nyash,” a term used to refer to a person’s backside, particularly when it is full or curvy. While it has roots in Nigerian Pidgin, the word has gained popularity across East and West Africa, including Kenya, where it is mostly considered informal slang rather than formal language. In some communities, it is regarded as casual or even slightly vulgar.
Another notable addition is “Abeg,” an expression derived from the English phrase “I beg.” Used as both an interjection and an adverb, “Abeg” conveys emotions such as surprise, frustration, or a humble request. Its inclusion reflects how African vernacular has influenced everyday English usage.
The update also recognizes “Afrobeats,” the music genre that blends African rhythms with jazz and pop, which has gained international acclaim. Other African terms added include “Biko” (meaning please), “Mammy Market” (a market run by women), and “Amala” (a Nigerian staple food made from yam or cassava).

How Words Make It to the Oxford Dictionary
Adding a word to the Oxford English Dictionary is a detailed process. Editors review evidence of widespread, real-world usage, examining books, newspapers, magazines, films, TV shows, and online content, including social media and blogs. They also consider how often the word is used and which regions or communities adopt it. Only when a word meets these standards does it earn a place in the dictionary, ensuring it reflects the evolving nature of the English language worldwide.
