Life of Raphael Tuju’s Former Wife Ruth Akinyi After Their Divorce

Former Raphael Tuju, who once served as Rarieda Member of Parliament and later as Foreign Affairs Minister, separated from his wife Ruth Akinyi more than a decade ago after staying together in marriage for about 26 years.

Their relationship ended in a controversial divorce after Tuju reportedly accused Akinyi of having a romantic relationship with their bodyguard, the late Tony Ogunda, who was an officer with the General Service Unit. The allegations created a lot of public attention at the time.

During their marriage, Tuju and Akinyi were blessed with three children. However, reports indicate that the former Cabinet Secretary has not remarried since the two went their separate ways.

How Life Changed for Ruth Akinyi

After the divorce, life reportedly took a different direction for Akinyi, especially financially. According to past reports by The Standard Group, she worked hard to rebuild her life following the separation.

In an effort to support herself, Akinyi is said to have started a small food business along Mombasa Road in Nairobi.

At the modest hotel, she reportedly prepares popular local meals such as chapati, matumbo, fish, liver, beef stew and rice. Most of her customers are office workers in the area looking for affordable meals during the day.

Sources indicated that she normally starts her work around 10 a.m., cooking the food using charcoal jikos before serving customers who visit the small eatery.

A Big Contrast in Lifestyle

Interestingly, while Akinyi was running a small roadside food business, her former husband Tuju continued to expand his investments.

Tuju, who made part of his wealth from politics, media and real estate, reportedly opened the high-end Dari Restaurant located in Karen, Nairobi after their separation.

Reports at the time described Akinyi’s small restaurant as having simple plastic chairs, while Tuju’s establishment featured a more luxurious setting with well-maintained grounds and elegant dining facilities.
