Kenya launches ClimCam to space for real-time weather monitoring

Kenya has taken a big step in space technology after successfully launching a special climate-monitoring device known as ClimCam into space.

The launch was confirmed by the Kenya Space Agency, which said the device is now on its way to the International Space Station (ISS). This marks an important achievement for Kenya and shows its growing role in space science.

ClimCam was launched on Saturday, April 11, at around 1:41 PM (East African Time). It was carried by a spacecraft from Northrop Grumman during its Cygnus NG-24 mission. The rocket used for the launch was the SpaceX Falcon 9, which took off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in the United States.

Reports show that the spacecraft separated successfully from the rocket a few minutes after takeoff. It is expected to reach and dock at the ISS on April 13 as part of a scheduled supply mission.

ClimCam is part of a joint project involving Kenya, Egypt, and Uganda. It was developed through cooperation between the Kenya Space Agency, the Egyptian Space Agency, and the Uganda National Space Programme.

The device was first assembled and tested in Cairo, Egypt, before undergoing further checks in Houston, Texas, with support from Airbus Defence and Space.

ClimCam uses artificial intelligence to collect and send climate and weather data almost instantly. This information will help countries in Eastern Africa to:

  • Monitor weather changes more accurately
  • Respond quickly to natural disasters
  • Manage natural resources better
  • Improve climate planning and resilience

The project was selected under a global program led by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, which supports countries in accessing space technology.

According to KSA, this mission shows that African countries are becoming more active in space research and are working together to develop modern technologies.

More updates are expected once ClimCam successfully reaches and starts working at the International Space Station.
