Gachagua Warns Political Goonism Could Plunge Kenya Into Civil War

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has warned that increasing political violence in Kenya could lead to serious instability in the country.
Speaking during a rally in Kajiado on Sunday, the former Deputy President called out William Ruto over what he described as a failure to control rising cases of political goonism.
Gachagua warned that if the situation is not handled quickly, it could push the country towards civil unrest.
“Do not create a situation where we are forced to remove you from office. If leaders like Matiang’i, Kalonzo, and others are harmed, the country could face serious consequences. Don’t allow Kenya to slide into civil war,” he said.
Gachagua also accused security officials, including Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, of failing to give the President accurate information about the situation on the ground.
He claimed that the level of violence being witnessed at political events is not being taken seriously.
According to him, political goons could later become a major problem for the country if no action is taken.

Chaos at Kikuyu Rally
On Saturday, a political rally held by Gachagua in Kikuyu turned chaotic after violence broke out.
Reports indicate that teargas was used, gunshots were heard, and some members of the public were harassed and forced to give money.
The situation worsened after some groups blocked major roads, including the Southern Bypass, by burning tyres and placing barriers on the road.
Before the rally, Gachagua had written to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja asking for tighter security.
In his letter, he warned that there were plans to disrupt the event using violence and destruction of property.
However, Kimani Ichung’wah blamed Gachagua for the violence witnessed in the area.
In a letter dated April 10, 2026, Ichung’wah accused the former Deputy President of fueling tension through divisive statements and alleged links to criminal groups.
