Martha Karua Says She Is Best Suited to Be Kenya’s Next President

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has said she believes she is the right person to become Kenya’s next president in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking in Mwea on Sunday, Karua said the time had come for Kenyans to elect a woman as president. She also pointed to her experience in government, including her time as Minister for Water and Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs during former President Mwai Kibaki’s administration.
Karua said she would bring integrity and leadership experience to the presidency.
“This time, allow a woman to be President of Kenya, and I am the most suited for the job,” Karua said.
The PLP leader also said she was ready to work with other leaders who share her vision for the country.
Karua rules out deputy president position
Karua has previously made it clear that she does not want to be a running mate in the 2027 election.
She has said she will either run for president or support another candidate who is selected through a fair process within the United Opposition coalition.
Speaking on Citizen TV in July, Karua said she would respect the coalition’s agreed process and support whoever is chosen as its presidential candidate.
However, she maintained that becoming a deputy president is not an option for her.
Karua’s position comes as several opposition leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua, Fred Matiang’i and former Chief Justice David Maraga, position themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
