How Onyango Tate Was Expelled From MKU After Criticising Education in Viral Video

Popular forex trader and online personality Onyango Tate became a trending topic in Kenya after he was expelled from Mount Kenya University in 2023 following a controversial video recorded inside an examination room.

The social media personality, whose real name is Job Onyango, went viral after claiming that exam papers could not make someone rich. In the video, he also criticised the education system and mocked lecturers by pointing at their cars, saying they were signs of people who had failed in life financially.

At the time, Onyango was a student at the university. He had already built a strong social media following where he regularly shared controversial opinions about money, success, and education. Many online users know him through the phrase “Escape the Matrix,” which he often uses in his videos.

During the viral clip, Onyango questioned the value of higher education and said he was only in school to please his parents.

“This is an exam paper, so tell me how this will make you rich,” he said in the video while speaking to fellow students.

He further argued that many graduates struggle in life after completing their studies, claiming university education does not guarantee wealth or success.

The video quickly spread across TikTok and other social media platforms, attracting both criticism and support from Kenyans online. Some people accused him of disrespecting lecturers and promoting negative advice to young people, while others supported his views about unemployment among graduates.

Following the incident, the university administration reportedly treated his actions as misconduct and later discontinued his studies in November 2023.

Instead of apologising after the expulsion, Onyango openly spoke about it during interviews and online shows. In one interview, he stated that he was more interested in money and lifestyle than school.

After leaving campus, he focused fully on forex trading, online influencing, and content creation. He also launched online channels where he shares trading content and motivational videos with followers.

Over time, Onyango Tate continued to show a flashy lifestyle on social media, posting photos and videos of expensive cars, bundles of cash, and luxury living. He claims to earn large amounts of money through forex trading and online business.

In 2026, he again attracted attention online after reports claimed he visited the university while driving a luxury Mercedes-Benz. Videos shared online showed crowds gathering around him at the campus entrance.

His story continues to create debate among Kenyan youths, especially on the importance of education, online business, and financial success. While some see him as a symbol of bold thinking and entrepreneurship, others believe his message may mislead students about the value of education.
