Six Nigerians Arrested in Thailand Over AI-Driven Romance Scam Ring

Thai police have arrested six Nigerian men in Bangkok after a raid on a luxury apartment in Nonthaburi, a suburb near the capital. The suspects are accused of running an international romance scam that targeted women online.

According to investigators, the group used artificial intelligence (AI) to create fake photos of wealthy foreign professionals. They pretended to be pilots, doctors, engineers, and other high-status workers to gain trust from their victims.

Police say the suspects also used fake video calls and online chats to convince victims that they were in real relationships. Most of the people targeted were older Thai women. After building trust, the scammers allegedly asked for money.

The operation, named “Operation Dark Room Crackdown,” originally began as a drug-related investigation but later uncovered the scam activities.

During the raid, officers recovered several items, including 18 mobile phones, laptops, bank documents, chat records with victims, scam scripts, and AI-generated profile images used in the fraud.

Authorities also suspect that some of the arrested men had overstayed their visas in Thailand for several years.

They are now facing immigration-related charges, and more fraud charges are expected as investigations continue.
