Irungu Kang’ata Claims Driver Shot During Nyahururu Political Clashes

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has claimed that his driver was shot during clashes that disrupted a Linda Mwananchi gathering in Nyahururu on Sunday, July 12.

According to the governor, his driver, identified as Gitari, was shot in the chest after chaos broke out while Kang’ata and other leaders were attending a church service at AIPCA Nyahururu Cathedral. Kang’ata alleged that their convoy was first attacked by people who threw stones before the situation escalated.

The governor also claimed that his vehicle was blocked and taken away during the incident. He said his driver was injured and was unable to move after being shot. However, it has not been confirmed whether a rubber bullet or live ammunition caused the injury.

Photos shared after the incident showed some vehicles in Kang’ata’s convoy with broken windows, apparently from being hit by stones.

The planned Linda Mwananchi rally was interrupted as supporters from rival groups clashed, forcing leaders to suspend the meeting for some time. Organisers later urged residents to remain calm and return to the venue, saying they would not be intimidated.

Among the leaders affected were Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi and Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, who reportedly left the rally after the disruption.

Governor Kang’ata appealed for peace and asked supporters to remain calm as efforts were made to continue with the meeting. The people responsible for the violence and the motive behind the attack had not been established by the time of publication.

The Nyahururu incident happened at about the same time as another confrontation in Kisumu, where a Linda Mwananchi church service attended by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo was also disrupted. Reports indicated that one person was seriously injured while police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.
