Teachers Strike Looms as KUPPET Gives TSC Seven-Day Ultimatum
2 min read
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has announced that teachers could go on a nationwide strike from August 14, 2026, if the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) does not promote the remaining 16,000 teachers.
KUPPET has given TSC seven days to act, warning that failure to do so will lead to industrial action.
The union says President William Ruto had directed TSC to promote 50,000 teachers, but the commission has advertised only 34,000 promotion opportunities.
KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori said the union wants TSC to honour the full number promised by the President.
The dispute comes as teachers prepare for the third term of the 2026 school year. If the strike goes ahead, it could affect learning in schools across the country.
Why KUPPET is threatening a strike
KUPPET officials say teachers have waited for promotions for years and that the President’s promise raised expectations among those who have been waiting for career progression.
The union argues that the 34,000 promotion vacancies advertised by TSC leave 16,000 teachers out of the 50,000 positions that were promised.
KUPPET National Chairperson Omboko Milemba said the union expects TSC to address the issue before the seven-day ultimatum expires.
TSC had advertised 54,016 vacancies
The strike threat comes shortly after TSC announced 54,016 teaching vacancies on July 28.
The vacancies included:
- 34,016 promotion opportunities for serving teachers.
- 20,000 positions for post-primary teachers to work in Junior Schools.
TSC said the recruitment would help address teacher shortages and support the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
When could the strike begin?
KUPPET says the nationwide strike will start on Friday, August 14, 2026, if TSC does not advertise and fill the remaining promotion positions.
The planned strike would come shortly before the third school term begins on August 24, 2026.
Teachers and parents will now be watching to see whether KUPPET and TSC reach an agreement before the deadline.
