Why Elijah of Young Millionaire Talks Could Have Approached Jeff Koinange Differently

Elijah, the young content creator behind Young Millionaire Talks, may have been looking for an opportunity to inspire young people and grow his platform, but his approach to veteran journalist Jeff Koinange could have been more professional.

During the encounter at the Africa Commerce and Industry Summit in Nairobi, Elijah approached Jeff while the veteran journalist appeared to be engaged in a conversation with other people.

Rather than waiting for the conversation to end or first asking whether Jeff was available for an interview, Elijah attempted to engage him while his videographer was recording.

From a professional standpoint, approaching a potential interview guest requires patience, courtesy and respect for their time. Asking permission before recording or interrupting someone can make a significant difference in how the request is received.

Jeff declined the immediate request and indicated that they could talk later. The brief encounter was captured on camera and subsequently sparked debate among Kenyans, with some criticising the journalist’s response while others defended his decision not to entertain an impromptu interview.

However, the situation also raises an important lesson for upcoming content creators: being in the same room with influential people is an opportunity, but knowing how to approach them professionally is equally important.

Elijah could have waited until Jeff finished his conversation, introduced himself politely and asked whether the journalist would be willing to grant him an interview. That approach might have created a better opportunity for further engagement, although there is no guarantee that Jeff would have accepted.

Ultimately, aspiring interviewers need more than a camera and an interesting platform. They also need communication skills, good timing and the ability to respect other people’s boundaries.

While some Kenyans felt Jeff was too dismissive of the young creator, the incident offers a useful lesson about professional etiquette and how upcoming content creators can approach established personalities.
