Details of the Building That Collapsed in Nairobi CBD: What Happened and Who Owns It?

A building that formerly housed Club Avenida collapsed during demolition along Moi Avenue in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) on Friday night, October 16, 2026, leaving four people injured.

The incident happened near MKU Union Towers as workers were demolishing the structure. Police and emergency teams responded to the scene to assist the injured and assess the situation.

According to Nairobi County official Geoffrey Mosiria, three of the injured people were in stable condition, while one sustained critical injuries.

Mosiria noted that the incident happened at night when there were fewer people using the road, possibly preventing more casualties.

What Caused the Building to Collapse?

The exact cause of the collapse had not been established in the initial reports. However, a worker involved in the demolition suggested that structural weakness may have contributed to the incident.

The worker explained that the team had been demolishing the building gradually before it suddenly collapsed while they were working on another section.

Investigations would be needed to establish the actual cause and determine whether the demolition was carried out according to the required safety procedures.

The premises had reportedly been fenced off in August in preparation for redevelopment.

Who Owns the Former Club Avenida Building?

The initial reports about the collapse did not identify the owner of the building that formerly housed Club Avenida.

The identity of the property owner, as well as the company or developer responsible for the demolition, had not been confirmed in the available information.

Further details would be needed to establish who owns the property and who was overseeing the demolition work.

Calls for Investigation After Nairobi CBD Building Collapse

The incident has raised questions about demolition safety in Nairobi, especially in busy commercial areas where buildings stand close to roads, businesses and pedestrian walkways.

Questions have also emerged about whether the demolition had the necessary approvals and whether qualified professionals were supervising the work.

Authorities are expected to establish what caused the building to collapse and whether the required safety measures were followed.

The incident comes amid other building collapses reported in Nairobi in 2026, renewing concerns about construction standards, demolition procedures and enforcement of safety regulations.
