Cost-of-Living Protests Erupt in Europe and Africa as France Faces Major Demonstrations (VIDEOS)

France is experiencing one of its biggest waves of protests in recent years, as thousands take to the streets over the rising cost of living and poor economic conditions.
What started as student demonstrations over school conditions in mid-September has grown into a wider movement involving trade unions, farmers, climate activists and members of the Yellow Vests movement.
The nationwide demonstrations held on Saturday attracted an estimated 550,000 people, according to France’s Interior Ministry. However, protest organisers put the number at approximately 800,000.
Police arrested more than 1,800 people following incidents of violence, including shop looting and fires in several cities. Some of the worst damage was reported around Place de la République in Paris.
Rising living costs, particularly fuel prices, are among the main issues driving the demonstrations. Global oil market disruptions linked to the Iran war have also contributed to higher fuel prices.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has responded by releasing fuel reserves and promising to present proposals addressing students’ concerns by the end of October. However, the demonstrations continue as protesters demand solutions to the economic challenges facing ordinary citizens.
Cost-of-Living Protests Across Europe and Africa
France is not the only country experiencing public anger over economic conditions. Protests over the cost of living, taxation, housing and poor public services have also been witnessed in other parts of Europe and Africa.
In European countries such as Italy, Spain and Portugal, demonstrations have focused on issues including expensive housing, low wages and access to public services.
In Africa, protests have often been driven by even deeper economic challenges, including unemployment, high taxation, rising living costs and limited social protection.
Some notable examples include Nigeria’s #EndSARS movement, anti-tax demonstrations in Kenya and youth-led protests in Morocco.
