Frequent Ejaculation May Improve Sperm Quality, New Study Reveals
2 min read
A new study has revealed that men who ejaculate more often may have healthier sperm, a finding that could change how people think about male fertility.
For many years, attention on fertility has mostly focused on women. It is often said that women have a “biological clock” because they are born with a fixed number of eggs that age over time.
However, men are different. Sperm is produced continuously from puberty, meaning new sperm is made all the time. But what happens when sperm stays in the body for too long?
Abstinence May Not Always Be Best
Many men trying to have children are advised to avoid sex for several days so that sperm can build up. While this can increase sperm count, new research shows that it may reduce sperm quality.
The study found that when men go for long periods without ejaculation, their sperm becomes weaker. It loses the ability to swim properly, its survival rate drops, and its DNA can become damaged.

Why Sperm Quality Drops
Researchers say there are two main reasons behind this:
- Oxidative stress – This is like “rust” in the body that damages sperm over time
- Loss of energy – Sperm are very active cells, but have limited energy, and when stored too long, they become weak
In simple terms, sperm that stay too long in the body may not be as strong as fresh sperm.
Shorter Waiting Time Could Be Better
Currently, the World Health Organization recommends that men abstain from ejaculation for two to seven days before giving a sperm sample for testing or fertility treatment.
But this new study suggests that shorter periods may actually produce better-quality sperm. In fact, research shows that ejaculating within 48 hours before procedures like IVF can improve chances of success.
Natural Explanation Behind the Findings
Scientists believe there may be a natural reason for this. Frequent ejaculation may help the body remove older, damaged sperm and replace it with fresh, healthier sperm.
This idea has also been observed in animals, where regular ejaculation improves sperm quality.

Sperm Also Deteriorates in Animals
The study did not only focus on humans. Researchers looked at over 50 studies involving different animals, including birds, reptiles, and insects.
They found a similar pattern: sperm quality reduces when it is stored for too long, whether inside males or females.
In some cases, embryos formed from older sperm had lower chances of survival.
Good News for Couples Trying to Conceive
The findings offer a simple solution that many couples can consider. While some fertility factors like stress, environment, or genetics are hard to control, the frequency of ejaculation is something that can be adjusted.
Using fresh sperm may improve the chances of successful fertilisation and healthy pregnancy outcomes.
