Health Survey Reveals 1 in 10 Young Men in Nairobi Have Erectile Dysfunction

A recent health survey has raised concern about sexual health among young men living in Nairobi, revealing that erectile dysfunction (ED) is affecting a notable number of men in their youth. The findings indicate that nearly 10 per cent of young men in the capital experience difficulty achieving or sustaining an erection during sexual activity.

The study, conducted by researchers from the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri), challenges the common belief that erectile dysfunction is only a problem for older men. Instead, experts say the condition is quietly affecting younger men, particularly those living in fast-paced urban environments.

Medical professionals explain that erectile dysfunction can result from a wide range of causes. Physical health issues such as diabetes, obesity, heart-related conditions, and hormonal disorders play a role, while mental health factors, including stress, anxiety, and depression, are also strongly linked to the condition.

Specialists warn that modern city lifestyles may be worsening the problem. Limited physical activity, unhealthy eating habits, alcohol consumption, and increasing work-related pressure are believed to be contributing to sexual health problems among young men in Nairobi.

On a global scale, erectile dysfunction is now viewed as a growing public health issue. Health projections suggest that by 2025, more than 322 million men worldwide could be living with the condition. This rise is largely attributed to ageing populations and an increase in non-communicable diseases that affect blood circulation and nerve function.

In Kenya, healthcare providers report a steady increase in men seeking treatment for ED, especially those between the ages of 40 and 69. Urologists note that lifestyle choices, mental health challenges and reduced physical activity are common factors among patients.

Despite being relatively common, erectile dysfunction remains widely underreported. Social stigma and cultural attitudes surrounding male sexual health often prevent open conversations, causing many men to avoid professional medical care. As a result, some turn to unregulated treatments, which may pose serious health risks.

Treatment for erectile dysfunction depends on its cause. Doctors recommend lifestyle adjustments such as regular exercise, healthier diets, and reduced alcohol intake. Psychological support, prescription medication to improve blood flow, and in severe cases, surgical procedures may also be used to manage the condition effectively.
