“Jamhuri Has Been Taken Over by Ethiopians and Eritreans,” Lady Claims, Alleging They Offer Triple Rent for Shops

A businesswoman in Jamhuri has spoken out about what she says is happening in the area, where some Ethiopian and Burundian business owners allegedly offer landlords much higher rent to take over businesses and rental houses.
She also claims that some of these businesses sell goods at lower prices, making it difficult for Kenyan business owners to compete.
The lady owns Picture Style Studio, a photography studio located in Jamhuri, off Ngong’ Road, just before the Nakumatt junction.
“I know there are people who have been taking advantage of foreigners to hurt them, but that is not what I am going to talk about. I want to share what we are going through as Kenyans kwa ground,” the lady explained.
“Ethiopians and Eritreans have taken over Jamhuri. Sijui wanatoa wapi pesa zao. They come, look at your shop, and tell the landlord, ‘I will give you triple.’ A shop that goes for KSh 20,000, they are willing to pay KSh 60,000.
“This is what has been happening in Jamhuri, to the point that Kenyans who own businesses cannot afford the new rent.”
She also raised concerns about rental houses, claiming that some tenants are suddenly informed that their rent has increased by KSh 7,000 or KSh 10,000.
“Unapata rent all of a sudden imepandishwa na 7,000. So that ukatae kulipa, they kick you out, ndio Ethiopians ama Eritreans waingie. Wanakaa in 10 ama 15 na watalipa hiyo 60K,” she said.
The businesswoman called for a strategy to be put in place to ensure that everyone can coexist peacefully, arguing that Kenyans should not suffer while foreigners benefit.
She further claimed that many Kenyan businesses in Jamhuri have been affected by rising rents, with some landlords allegedly increasing rent by KSh 5,000 or KSh 10,000 simply because a foreign business owner is interested in taking over the shop.
The lady is urging Kenyans in Jamhuri to come together and discuss how they can protect their businesses and livelihoods.
