The National Assembly has passed the Kenya Roads (Amendment) Bill, 2024, paving the way for dedicated facilities for pedestrians and cyclists on roads across the country.
The Bill, sponsored by Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda, requires new roads as well as roads being repaired or upgraded to provide safe facilities for people using non-motorized transport.
These facilities will include dedicated cycling lanes, pedestrian walkways and clearly marked pedestrian crossings.
Lesuuda said the law is aimed at improving road safety for pedestrians and cyclists, who have often been left out when road infrastructure is being planned and developed.
Under the new requirements, road authorities will have to consider the needs of pedestrians and cyclists when designing and improving roads across Kenya.
