Man Charged After Allegedly Killing 100-Year-Old Mother Over Property Dispute

A man from Kericho County is facing a serious murder charge after he was accused of killing his 100-year-old mother in a case linked to a family inheritance dispute.

According to a statement released on Wednesday, March 18, by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the suspect, Julius Cheruiyot Bett, has been taken to court over the death of his mother, Grace Chelangat.

Prosecutors said the incident happened on March 7, 2026, in the Kiptere area, Sigowet Sub-County, Kericho County. It is alleged that Bett used a vehicle to run over his elderly mother, causing her death.

The prosecution, led by David Fedha, told the court that the act was intentional and was connected to ongoing disagreements over family property. Authorities believe the suspect had been pushing for control of the inheritance, which may have led to the tragic incident.

Bett appeared before Joseph Sergon, where he denied the accusations and pleaded not guilty.

The court also considered whether he should be released on bond. However, the prosecution opposed his release, and the judge agreed, meaning Bett will remain in custody as the case continues.

The case will be mentioned again on May 12, 2026, as the court prepares for the next stage of the trial.

Another Case Highlights Violence Against Elderly Victims

This incident comes just months after another disturbing case involving violence against an elderly person.

In that case, a court in Kithimani sentenced a man to death for attacking and robbing the mother of former Yatta MP Charles Kilonzo.

The ODPP identified the attacker as Josephat Mutuku Kasyema, who was found guilty of assaulting 80-year-old Agnes Njeri Kilonzo.

The court heard that the man stole her mobile phone and money before seriously injuring her. He reportedly cut her on the head with a panga, tied her up, and left her inside her house.

The victim was later rescued, but the attack left her with severe injuries, including the loss of her ability to speak.

This incident happened on December 8, 2023, in the Ndarani area, Yatta, Machakos County.
