Residents of Kericho County have been left in shock after reports emerged of a suspected mass grave at Makaburini Cemetery, prompting a swift response from authorities.
In a statement issued on Sunday, March 22, the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that officers had secured the cemetery to protect any possible evidence as investigations began.
According to the police, officers moved quickly to the scene after receiving reports of multiple bodies allegedly buried under unclear circumstances.

Discovery by Grave Diggers
The incident first came to light on Saturday when two grave diggers working at the cemetery noticed unusual activity and later discovered the suspected mass grave. They immediately reported the matter to Kericho Police Station, triggering a rapid response.
The workers told investigators that earlier in the week, a group of unknown individuals had visited the cemetery and held discussions with the caretaker before leaving. Their behavior raised suspicion among staff.
Suspicious Burial Activity
The following day, the same group reportedly returned in a vehicle and instructed the workers to dig a large grave. Believing it was a normal burial request, the workers complied.
However, things took a disturbing turn when several bodies were allegedly brought to the site and buried in a single grave. Witnesses claim the bodies were transported in bags, raising serious concerns.
Police Investigation Ongoing
Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed that some witnesses have already recorded statements, while efforts are ongoing to trace and question other individuals linked to the incident.
Early reports suggest that the number of bodies buried in the grave could be as high as 14, although this has not yet been officially confirmed.
Authorities have cautioned the public against concluding, noting that investigations are still in the early stages.
“At this preliminary stage, we are working to verify the claims. More witnesses are being interviewed to help establish the truth,” the NPS said.
DCI Joins Probe
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have also visited the scene and started initial assessments.
Police are expected to seek court approval to exhume the bodies if necessary, to determine the exact number of victims and the circumstances surrounding the burials.
Public Urged to Help
Authorities have appealed to members of the public who may have any useful information to report to the nearest police station or use toll-free numbers to assist with the investigation.
The case continues to unfold as investigators work to uncover the truth behind the disturbing discovery.
