Police in Kisumu have arrested three people suspected of being behind the recent attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi.
The suspects have been identified as Carlos Owiti, also known as Kalonje (24), Vincent Odhiambo alias Tinga (27), both from Nyalenda, and Eric Otieno alias Dude (39) from Manyatta.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the three were arrested after intelligence-led operations and information shared by members of the public. Authorities thanked citizens who helped with useful tips and urged more people to cooperate as investigations continue.
Police said they are still searching for more suspects linked to the incident. The three arrested individuals are currently in custody and are expected to be taken to court soon.
Senator Osotsi was injured during the attack, which happened at a restaurant in Kisumu on Wednesday. He was later airlifted to Nairobi for specialized medical care.
Investigators have already started examining CCTV footage from the scene, hoping it will help identify more people involved and explain how the attack happened.
The DCI strongly condemned the incident and wished the senator a quick recovery. The agency also asked the public to stay calm and avoid spreading unverified information as investigations continue.
According to Derick Luvega, the Director of Communication at the Vihiga Senate Office, the senator had gone to the Acacia area for a haircut before heading to a nearby restaurant, where he met a friend and interacted with residents.
Shortly after, a group of armed individuals reportedly approached him and questioned him about his political position.
Reports suggest that the attackers targeted him because he supported the “one-term” political movement linked to the Linda Mwananchi faction.
Luvega explained that the senator’s security team chose not to use their firearms during the incident to avoid putting the lives of innocent people at risk.
While receiving treatment in the hospital, Senator Osotsi described the incident as an attempted assassination. He claimed the attack was politically motivated and accused some senior security officials of being involved.
Investigations into the incident are still ongoing as authorities work to ensure all those responsible are brought to justice.
