Three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruits have died after suffering medical emergencies during a training exercise at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
In a statement released on Friday, the military said the incident happened on Thursday, January 29, 2026, during a routine endurance drill that forms part of the recruits’ training programme.
According to KDF, the exercise was carried out under standard procedures and close supervision by instructors.
The recruits reportedly developed sudden medical complications while participating in the exercise. Medical teams at the training facility responded immediately and provided first aid before the recruits were rushed to Eldoret Regional Hospital for specialised treatment.
Despite intensive efforts by doctors and medical staff at the hospital, the three recruits were later pronounced dead.
KDF confirmed that the families of the deceased have been officially informed and that the military is offering support and assistance to help them cope with the loss.
The military expressed deep sorrow over the deaths, extending condolences to the families, friends, fellow recruits, and colleagues of the victims, describing the incident as a painful moment for the armed forces.
Following the tragedy, KDF has launched a detailed investigation to establish the exact circumstances that led to the deaths. The findings of the probe are expected to guide further action and help strengthen safety measures during training.
