33 Bodies, Including 25 Children, Exhumed from Mass Grave in Kericho

Residents of Kericho County have been left in shock after authorities exhumed at least 33 bodies from a suspected mass grave at a local cemetery.

The operation, carried out on Tuesday by a multi-agency team, revealed a much bigger discovery than was earlier expected. Initial reports had suggested that only 14 bodies were buried at the site. However, officials later confirmed that a total of 33 bodies were recovered.

Out of these, 25 were children, raising serious concerns among investigators. Authorities also recovered six separate body parts, including both arms and legs.

Officials said the remains were found in different conditions, showing that the bodies were buried at different times. This has raised questions about where the bodies came from and how they ended up in the cemetery.

“The findings show multiple human remains with signs pointing to different burial timelines and possible external sources,” officials revealed.

Early investigations suggest that some of the bodies could have been moved from mortuaries before being buried at the site.

The exercise was supervised by senior homicide officers, with government pathologists also present to oversee the process. According to preliminary findings, eight of the bodies belonged to adults, while the majority were children.

All the remains have since been taken to a mortuary for further examination. Experts are now working to determine the causes of death and identify the victims.

Authorities say forensic investigations will also help establish whether any criminal activities were involved, beyond possible illegal burial practices.

Meanwhile, two suspects have already been taken to court in connection with the case. They appeared before the Kericho Chief Magistrate’s Court on March 23, 2026.

The court allowed police to detain the suspects for 30 days to give investigators enough time to continue with the probe and complete the exhumation process.

Investigations are still ongoing as authorities try to uncover the truth behind the shocking discovery and identify those buried at the site.
