5 Kenyans Who Transitioned from Music to Politics

Kenya’s music industry has not only shaped entertainment but has also played a role in influencing political ambitions. Over the years, several musicians have used their fame, public connections, and influence to venture into politics, with some successfully winning elective positions.

Below are five Kenyan artists who made notable attempts to move from music into political leadership.

1. Charles Njagua (Jaguar)

Charles Njagua, popularly known as Jaguar, is among the most successful Kenyan musicians to enter politics. At the peak of his music career, he surprised many by contesting for the Starehe Constituency parliamentary seat.

In the 2017 General Election, Jaguar emerged victorious and served as the Member of Parliament for Starehe. He attributed his success to his understanding of grassroots issues and his close interaction with the public during his years in the entertainment industry. His popularity as an artist played a major role in boosting his political appeal.

2. Henry Ohanga (Octopizzo)

Henry Ohanga, widely recognized by his stage name Octopizzo, is a celebrated Kenyan rapper who has dominated the hip-hop scene for over a decade.

Building on his strong youth following, Octopizzo has declared his intention to vie for the Kibra parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election. He is expected to seek the seat under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, positioning himself as a voice for young people and creatives.

3. Johnson Sakaja

Before becoming Nairobi County Governor, Johnson Sakaja had a brief involvement in music during his younger years. He was part of a rap group known as Mission Driven.

In 2006, the group released a song titled Save Me Saviour (Forgive), in which Sakaja featured prominently. The song later resurfaced online, sparking public interest in his artistic background. Despite the short-lived music journey, Sakaja successfully transitioned into politics and currently serves as Nairobi’s governor.

4. Kevin Bahati

Kevin Kioko, popularly known as Bahati, is one of Kenya’s most influential gospel musicians. With a career spanning more than ten years, Bahati built a strong fan base, especially among the youth.

In the 2022 General Election, he contested for the Mathare parliamentary seat under the Jubilee Party. Although he did not win, his entry into politics sparked national debate on celebrity influence and leadership. His attempt marked a significant moment in the intersection of music and politics.

5. Jackson Ngechu Makini (Prezzo)

Jackson Ngechu Makini, famously known as Prezzo, is a veteran musician credited with shaping Kenya’s urban music scene in the mid-2000s.

In 2022, Prezzo expressed interest in running for the Kasarani parliamentary seat. Initially affiliated with the Wiper Democratic Party, he later stepped aside from the race before the elections. Although his political ambition did not materialize, it highlighted his desire to transition into public service.
