Ruto to hand over keys to 4,500 homeowners in Mukuru
President William Ruto is set to hand over house keys to more than 4,500 families in Mukuru, marking Phase Two of the Mukuru Affordable Housing Project.
The move will see beneficiaries leave iron-sheet houses behind and move into modern high-rise apartments with water, power, sanitation, and social amenities.
Apart from the homes, the President will also commission: A police station, a fire station, and a public hospital.
“These homes are about restoring dignity,” Ruto said, adding that decent housing is no longer a privilege but a right for ordinary Kenyans.
For decades, Mukuru residents have lived without proper sanitation, security, or land ownership. The new project changes that reality, offering secure housing for low- and middle-income earners.

The project falls under the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which targets long-neglected informal settlements.
Phase One of the project was completed in May 2025, when 1,080 families received their keys. Phase Two now pushes the total number of completed houses into the thousands, easing congestion in one of Nairobi’s most crowded areas.
In the long run, the Mukuru regeneration plan will include schools, roads, green spaces, and health facilities, turning the area into a fully planned estate.
“Life has changed”
Many beneficiaries say the new homes are life-changing.
“I never thought I would own a home like this. My children will now live safely,” said one resident who previously lived in a flood-prone shack.
