How to Check School Placement After KJSEA Results
The Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) results were released on Friday, December 11, by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), marking the first assessment under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Over one million learners were assessed in nine learning areas, but unlike KCPE, these results did not come with marks, grades, or rankings — a move that left many parents, learners, and even teachers confused.
Why KJSEA Results Look Different
KJSEA results focus on learner abilities, not competition. Instead of scores, learners are assessed using performance levels that show strengths, skills, and areas of interest.
According to education experts, this approach helps guide learners toward the right pathways during placement, based on talent and aptitude rather than memorisation.
No Rankings, No Mean Scores
Despite this clear shift, some schools rushed to release their own rankings and mean scores — a practice strongly discouraged under CBC.
KJSEA does not support school ranking, and there are no aggregate scores. Each learner is assessed individually, subject by subject.
So, How Will Placement Work?
School placement under CBC will be guided by:
-
Learner performance levels
-
Talents and interests
-
Teacher input
-
Parental guidance
Once placement is officially released, parents will be able to check school placement through the KNEC online portal using the learner’s assessment number. KNEC and the Ministry of Education will issue clear instructions when the process begins.

Bottom Line
CBC is not about marketing schools or chasing headlines. It is about developing skills, nurturing talent, and preparing learners for the future.
The era of rankings is gone.
The era of ability-based learning is here.
