Ranking: Top 10 Best Kenyan Universities in Kenya 2026

Kenya’s university sector continues to show steady progress on the global stage, with local institutions gaining recognition for teaching quality, research output, and overall student experience. The latest international and regional rankings released by Times Higher Education and UNIRANKS place Kenyatta University at the top among Kenyan universities heading into 2026.

Kenyatta University Takes the Lead

Kenyatta University has emerged as the best university in Kenya in the most recent global assessments, finishing ahead of the University of Nairobi. According to the 2026 World University Rankings by Times Higher Education, Kenyatta University outperformed UoN in key areas such as quality of education, research strength, financial sustainability, and contribution to good health and well-being.

Although both institutions were placed in the 1000–1500 global band, the rankings marked a drop from their previous positions, where they had featured between 500 and 1000 globally. Even so, Kenyatta University remained the highest-ranked locally, confirming its growing influence in higher education.

University of Nairobi Comes Second

The University of Nairobi retains a strong reputation both locally and internationally. In the UNIRANKS 2025 assessment, UoN earned Elite University status, a distinction awarded to institutions with exceptional academic performance, student outcomes, and national impact.

Ranked 14th in Africa and 952 globally, UoN continues to stand out for its research output, international partnerships, and contribution to Kenya’s development agenda, despite finishing second behind Kenyatta University locally.
