Education in Kiharu Constituency is set for a major boost following the launch of the Masomo Bora 2025 programme by area MP Ndindi Nyoro, a move aimed at easing the cost of learning for day secondary school students.
The programme was officially unveiled on January 10, 2025, at Mugoiri Mixed Day Secondary School, in an event attended by key education and financial sector leaders. Among those present were Family Bank CEO Nancy Njau and National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) CEO Dr. Purity Ngina, alongside county education officials and local leaders.
At the heart of the initiative is a bold decision to cap school fees at Ksh 1,000 per term for all students attending day secondary schools within Kiharu. Any additional costs will be met through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), significantly lowering the financial burden on parents.
Speaking during the launch, MP Nyoro said the programme is designed to ensure that no learner misses out on education due to lack of school fees.
“This programme is about fairness and opportunity. Parents will only pay Ksh 1,000 per term, and the rest will be fully supported,” Nyoro stated.
Beyond fee reduction, Masomo Bora 2025 introduces a free school meals programme for all day secondary students across the constituency. Learners will receive lunch from Monday to Saturday, with meals such as rice, githeri, mukimo, and chapati included in the menu.
Nyoro emphasized that proper nutrition plays a key role in academic success, noting that students learn better when their basic needs are met.
The initiative also prioritizes long-term improvements in learning facilities. A total of Ksh 100 million has been set aside over the next two years for the construction and upgrading of science laboratories and computer labs, strengthening education in science, technology, and digital skills.
Students will additionally benefit from free revision books, while the cost of remedial lessons for those requiring extra academic support has been capped at Ksh 1,000, ensuring affordability for all families.
In a move to encourage excellence, the programme will fully sponsor annual prize-giving ceremonies in both Kiharu and Mathioya sub-counties, rewarding top-performing students and schools. Teachers and school administrators have not been left out, with incentives such as Dubai trips for outstanding principals and fully paid Mombasa trips for exemplary teachers included to boost morale and performance.
Importantly, the programme is inclusive, covering all students enrolled in day secondary schools within Kiharu, regardless of their home constituency. Schools will also receive increased activity budgets to support co-curricular and extracurricular programmes.
Education stakeholders present at the launch, including County Director of Education Madam Ann and MCAs John Kamwaga, Wa Kang’ata, and Machigo, praised the initiative, describing it as a turning point for education access in the region.
Family Bank CEO Nancy Njau lauded the programme as a strong example of leadership, saying it eases pressure on families while investing in the future of young people.
The Masomo Bora 2025 initiative is expected to benefit more than 10,000 students across 13 day secondary schools in Kiharu. As implementation begins, education experts believe the programme could serve as a benchmark for other constituencies seeking affordable and quality education solutions.
MP Nyoro concluded by reaffirming his commitment to education, stating that the programme marks the start of a broader effort to equip students with the support they need to succeed academically and beyond.
