DCI Links Nyamira Hospital to 33 Bodies Found in Kericho Mass Grave

Investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have revealed that all 33 bodies discovered in a mass grave in Kericho County came from Nyamira County Referral Hospital.

Speaking on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, DCI Director Mohamed Amin confirmed that the hospital’s management and CCTV footage supported the findings. This contradicts earlier claims by Nyamira County officials, who had said only 13 bodies were released.

According to Amin, the evidence clearly shows that all the remains buried at the Kericho site originated from the Nyamira hospital mortuary.

“All the bodies recovered here came from Nyamira County Referral Hospital, and the hospital management has confirmed this,” he said.

CCTV footage from the hospital

Detectives are now focusing their investigations on how the hospital mortuary has been operating. Authorities suspect that more bodies, especially those of infants, may have been released without proper records.

CCTV footage from the hospital reportedly shows how some of the bodies were transported. In one incident, four bags were loaded into a white Toyota Land Cruiser by the hospital’s chief mortician, under the supervision of a public health officer.

This has raised serious questions about how bodies were handled and documented at the facility.

The DCI has also uncovered major gaps in hospital records. While reports show that 46 infants died and were taken to the morgue, there is no clear documentation showing how or when their bodies were released.

This has raised fears that additional remains may have been disposed of without proper procedures.

Deep Investigation by DCI

So far, postmortems have been conducted and DNA samples collected from the bodies found in the mass grave.

Investigators are now working to:

  • Identify the victims
  • Trace their families
  • Understand how the bodies ended up in the mass grave

Authorities are also investigating the ownership of the burial site and the possible involvement of cemetery workers and other individuals.

The shocking discovery of the mass grave has raised serious concerns among Kenyans, with many questioning how such an incident could happen without being noticed earlier.

The DCI has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and those responsible will be held accountable.
