Over 10,000 Kibera Soweto Residents Given 13-Day Eviction Notice

More than 10,000 residents living in Soweto Zones C and D in Kibera have been given 13 days to move out or face forced eviction by the government.

According to a notice from the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, the planned eviction is part of an ongoing urban upgrading programme.

Residents have been asked to vacate the area by April 23, 2026. The government says clearing of the land will begin the following day.

“This is to inform all residents of Kibera Soweto Zones C and D that site clearing will start on April 24, 2026. Kindly vacate the area before April 23, 2026,” the notice stated.

The notice, which was received by the Deputy County Commissioner of Lang’ata Sub-County on April 7, is now being shared with affected residents.

Why the Eviction is Happening

The government plans to redevelop the area by building modern houses under its Affordable Housing Programme. The project aims to replace the current informal structures with high-rise apartments.

Officials say the new houses will have better living conditions, including clean water, electricity, proper waste management, and social amenities such as schools and playgrounds.

Residents who will be affected by the eviction are expected to be given priority when the new housing units are allocated.

Population in the Affected Areas

Data from housing reports shows that:

  • Zone C covers about 3.6 hectares and has around 3,200 residents living in over 400 structures.
  • Zone D is larger, covering about 4.5 hectares, with over 4,300 residents living in close to 600 structures.

Together, the two zones have a population of more than 8,000 people, many of whom depend on small businesses within the area.

Government’s Long-Term Plan

The redevelopment of these zones is part of a bigger plan to build about 25,000 housing units in Kibera.

The government says earlier phases of the project are almost complete, and the success of the current phase will depend on proper planning and cooperation with residents.

Authorities have also promised a transparent process to ensure that affected residents benefit from the new housing.
