Kenya Met Lists 5 Regions to Experience Heavy Rains This Weekend

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned Kenyans in several parts of the country to prepare for heavy rains this weekend.

According to the weather forecast, areas in Central Kenya, Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the Coast and Northern Kenya are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall from Friday, May 15 to Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

Counties expected to experience heavy rains in Central Kenya include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi.

The weather department said most of the rain will be experienced in the afternoon and continue into the night hours.

The rains are expected to be heavier on Friday and Saturday before reducing slowly from Sunday to Tuesday next week.

In Western Kenya, Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin, counties expected to receive rain include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia and Baringo.

Other affected counties are Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

The weatherman said many of these areas will experience cloudy mornings before rain starts later in the afternoon.

However, some parts of the country are expected to remain sunny and dry. These include Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta and inland areas of Tana River County.

Cold Nights Expected

Apart from the heavy rains, the weather department has also warned residents in parts of Central Kenya and Nairobi to prepare for very cold nights over the next five days.

Temperatures in counties such as Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kiambu, Murang’a, Meru, Embu and Nairobi are expected to drop to around 10 degrees Celsius before slightly rising later in the week.

At the same time, hot daytime temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius are expected in the Coast region, North Eastern Kenya and North Western Kenya.

Strong Winds Along the Coast

The Meteorological Department also warned of strong winds and rough sea conditions along the Coast.

Counties expected to be affected include Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi and Lamu.

According to the forecast, strong southern winds in the morning and afternoon could make the sea rough, with waves expected to rise between 4 and 6 feet.
