Who Is Wicknell Chivayo? Zimbabwean Tycoon Linked to KSh375 Billion JKIA Expansion Deal

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo has attracted attention in Kenya after his company was linked to the proposed KSh375 billion expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Popularly known as Sir Wicknell, he is the founder and chief executive officer of Intratrek Zimbabwe, a company involved in energy, transport and infrastructure projects.

Close Relationship With President William Ruto

Chivayo has built a close relationship with President William Ruto over the last two years.

In January 2025, he shared photos taken at the President’s residence in Kilgoris, describing Ruto as a mentor. Since then, he has held several meetings with the Kenyan leader, including at Sagana State Lodge and State House, Nairobi.

He has also appeared alongside President Ruto and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan during official meetings.

In June 2026, Chivayo visited Wajir State Lodge, where he revealed that he was discussing a multi-million-dollar investment project in Kenya with the Head of State.

Business Empire

Chivayo started working at the age of 15 after leaving school. He later ventured into foreign exchange trading before establishing Intratrek Zimbabwe in 2008.

The company focuses on engineering, renewable energy and infrastructure projects. One of its most notable ventures is the Gwanda Solar Power Station in Zimbabwe.

Apart from Intratrek, Chivayo owns TRX, a transport and logistics company that operates dozens of fuel tankers.

His investments extend to several countries, including Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa.

In 2025, Intratrek signed a US$2.5 billion agreement with China’s Chint Group for electricity transmission projects in Kenya and Tanzania.

Philanthropy and Luxury Lifestyle

The businessman is also known for his lavish lifestyle and generous donations.

He frequently displays luxury cars and private jet trips on social media. Over the years, he has donated vehicles, cash and other gifts to public figures, musicians, sports personalities and religious leaders.

Past Controversies

Despite his success, Chivayo has faced several controversies throughout his career.

In 2004, he served a prison sentence after being convicted in a fraud case. His name has also been linked to investigations involving energy contracts and government tenders in Zimbabwe.

One of the biggest controversies involved the Gwanda Solar Power Project, which attracted public scrutiny following concerns over delays and implementation.

He was also investigated over contracts related to Zimbabwe’s election materials. However, Zimbabwe’s Anti-Corruption Commission later stated that he had been cleared of wrongdoing.

Why He Is in the Spotlight

Chivayo is now attracting interest in Kenya because of his connection to the proposed KSh375 billion JKIA expansion project.

His close ties with regional leaders, growing business empire and history of controversies have made him one of the most talked-about businessmen in Southern Africa.

Even with the controversies that have followed him over the years, Chivayo remains a prominent figure in business and continues to pursue major investment projects across the region.
