Millions Nairobi County Loses in One Day During Protests

As Kenyans mark the anniversary of the June 25, 2024, Gen Z protests, fresh figures have revealed the huge economic losses Nairobi County suffers whenever major demonstrations take place.
The June 25 commemoration remembers the young Kenyans who took to the streets to oppose the Finance Bill in 2024. The protests reached their peak when thousands of demonstrators entered the Parliament buildings in Nairobi.
Organisers say this year’s event is meant to honour more than 120 people who lost their lives during the 2024 protests and later demonstrations. Activists and victims’ families have named the day “Gen Z Liberation Day” and are calling for justice and government accountability.
Despite assurances from the government that peaceful protests would be protected, business owners remain worried about the economic impact of demonstrations.
According to estimates, Nairobi loses up to KSh 10.4 billion in economic output and productivity in just one day of large-scale protests. The losses come as businesses close, workers stay at home, and transport services are disrupted.
Nairobi County’s daily revenue collection also drops significantly during protests. The county normally collects between KSh 70 million and KSh 80 million every day. However, when access to the Central Business District (CBD) is blocked, collections can fall to around KSh 40 million, representing a loss of about KSh 40 million.
The transport sector is also heavily affected. Matatu operators are estimated to lose around KSh 150 million in a single day as many vehicles stay off the roads due to safety concerns and fewer passengers.
The impact goes beyond Nairobi. The private sector estimates that nationwide protests can result in losses of up to KSh 3 billion every day, affecting businesses, traders, and workers across the country.
While many Kenyans see demonstrations as an important constitutional right, business owners continue to count the cost whenever the capital city comes to a standstill.
