Canada Opens New Opportunities for Kenyans Seeking Jobs and Permanent Residence

Canada has continued to invite skilled workers to apply for permanent residence through its Express Entry system, creating opportunities for qualified professionals, including Kenyans.
In the first week of August 2026, Canada held four Express Entry draws and issued thousands of invitations to candidates in different categories.
Canada Express Entry draws in August 2026
The first draw was held on August 4 under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). Canada issued 507 invitations, with candidates required to have a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 768.
On August 5, another draw targeting the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) invited 3,000 candidates. The CRS cut-off was 516.
The biggest draw came on August 6, when Canada invited 5,000 candidates with French-language skills. The CRS cut-off was 391, making it one of the more accessible Express Entry draws this year.
A further draw targeting transport occupations was held on August 7. It issued 300 invitations to candidates with a CRS score of at least 470.
What this means for Kenyans
Kenyans with relevant education, work experience and language skills can qualify for Canada’s Express Entry programmes if they meet the required conditions.
French-speaking applicants may have an advantage in category-based draws because Canada continues to give priority to French-language proficiency.
Applicants should also check whether their occupation falls under one of Canada’s priority categories for 2026.
Ontario introduces new worker pathway
Ontario has also introduced a new Workforce Priority Stream under the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP).
The programme has three main pathways targeting:
- Higher-skilled workers with a qualifying job offer from an approved employer
- Lower-skilled workers with a qualifying job offer
- Self-employed physicians who are eligible to practise in Ontario
Interested applicants can submit an Expression of Interest through Ontario’s e-Filing Portal.
An Expression of Interest remains valid for up to 12 months. Candidates who receive an invitation must submit their full application within 17 calendar days.
Some successful applicants may also qualify for faster permanent residence processing through Canada’s Express Entry-linked provincial nomination system.
Canada’s priority occupations in 2026
Canada has adjusted its category-based Express Entry system to focus on skills needed in the country’s economy.
Some of the priority areas include:
- French-language proficiency
- Healthcare and social services
- STEM occupations
- Skilled trades
- Education
- Transport occupations
- Physicians
- Researchers
- Senior managers with Canadian work experience
Transport-related occupations can include professionals such as pilots, aircraft mechanics and inspectors.
Important change for applicants
One major change applicants should know about is the work experience requirement for category-based Express Entry draws.
Candidates now generally need at least 12 months of relevant work experience within the past three years, compared with the previous six-month requirement for some categories.
Applicants must also qualify for one of Canada’s three main Express Entry programmes: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class or Federal Skilled Trades Program.
Kenyans interested in moving to Canada should check the official eligibility requirements before starting an application, as meeting the minimum requirements does not automatically guarantee an invitation.
