The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi has announced new job opportunities for Kenyans with experience in security, investigations and technical security systems.
The vacancies are for a Residential Security Equipment Technician and a Security Investigator. Both are full-time positions based in Nairobi, with applications closing on August 30, 2026.
The advertised annual salaries are KSh 1,539,616 for the Residential Security Equipment Technician and KSh 2,478,361 for the Security Investigator.
Applications are submitted online through the U.S. Department of State’s Electronic Recruitment Application (ERA) system.
1. Residential Security Equipment Technician
The U.S. Mission in Kenya is looking for one person to work as a Residential Security Equipment Technician within its Regional Security Office.
The position pays KSh 1,539,616 per year and is a permanent, full-time job.
The successful applicant will mainly be responsible for installing, checking, repairing and maintaining security equipment in U.S. Government residential properties.
The work includes dealing with alarm systems, CCTV equipment, security lighting, panic buttons, sensors, intercoms, locks and other security installations.
The technician will also inspect security systems before employees move into residences and respond when equipment develops technical problems.
Requirements
Applicants for the technician position must:
Have completed high school.
Have at least two years of experience installing, repairing or maintaining electronic security equipment.
Have knowledge of physical security installations such as grills, masonry and safe-haven doors.
Have good working knowledge of English and Kiswahili.
Have basic knowledge of electrical systems and circuitry.
Have knowledge of CCTV and security alarm equipment.
Be able to use Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel and Outlook.
Have good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
The successful candidate must also be able to pass the required background checks and obtain the necessary security clearance or certification.
The normal working schedule is Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week. However, the employee may sometimes be required to work outside normal hours, including weekends, when there is an urgent security equipment problem.
2. Security Investigator
The second vacancy is for a Security Investigator working within the Regional Security Office at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi.
The position pays KSh 2,478,361 annually and is also a permanent, full-time position.
The investigator will handle sensitive security investigations and work closely with Kenyan law enforcement and other government agencies.
The job includes conducting background checks, investigating cases involving fraud or misconduct, gathering security information and helping assess threats that could affect U.S. Embassy staff and operations.
The successful candidate will also maintain professional contacts with Kenyan police, security, immigration, customs and judicial officials.
Key duties
The Security Investigator will be expected to:
Conduct background and special investigations.
Interview people and check references.
Carry out employment and neighbourhood checks.
Investigate suspected fraud, misconduct and other cases when assigned.
Maintain working relationships with Kenyan security and law enforcement agencies.
Gather information about crime and security conditions in different parts of Kenya.
Help assess security risks affecting official travel.
Support security arrangements for senior U.S. Government officials.
Prepare reports and security assessments.
Support residential and hotel security surveys when required.
The position can also involve work outside normal office hours because of the nature of security investigations.
Requirements
Applicants for the Security Investigator position must have:
At least two years of university education in international studies, security, law enforcement, legal studies or a related field.
At least five years of experience in law enforcement, military service, private security or investigations.
Fluent written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
Good knowledge of Kenya’s security and law enforcement structures.
Good knowledge of Kenyan law.
Ability to conduct sensitive investigations and handle evidence properly.
Ability to prepare professional reports in English.
Ability to work with senior officials and maintain professional contacts.
A valid driver’s licence that has been held for at least five years.
The successful applicant must pass the required background investigation and obtain the necessary security clearance. A pre-employment medical examination may also be required.
