Cameroon President Paul Biya Has Not Been Seen in Public in 53 Days After Travelling to Switzerland

Cameroon President Paul Biya has not been seen in public for the past 53 days, raising questions from opposition leaders about who is currently leading the country.

The 93-year-old leader travelled to Switzerland on June 7 together with First Lady Chantal Biya. Government officials had said it would be a short private visit, but he has not returned to Cameroon or made any public appearance since then.

Despite growing speculation, the government has dismissed reports that the president is unwell. Communications Minister René Emmanuel Sadi said Biya is in good health and continues to carry out his official duties from Geneva, Switzerland.

Labour Minister Grégoire Owona also said the president is on his annual leave and will return after completing his break.

However, opposition leaders have criticised the government for failing to explain why the president’s stay abroad has lasted much longer than expected. They argue that Cameroon is facing uncertainty because the head of state has not been seen or addressed the nation for several weeks.

Paul Biya has been Cameroon’s president since 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. He was sworn in for another seven-year term after the country’s disputed presidential election last year.

He has not yet named a new government, even as Cameroon prepares for parliamentary and municipal elections expected in early 2027.

Recently, Cameroon restored the position of vice president, but the role remains vacant. This means there is currently no official deputy to take over presidential responsibilities if needed.

Although the government insists President Biya is healthy, his long absence from public view continues to fuel debate both within Cameroon and internationally.
